Riyan Parag Names Virat Kohli as Key Inspiration, Recalls Special India Cap Moment
Young Indian all-rounder Riyan Parag has expressed his deep admiration for Virat Kohli, citing him as a major inspiration in his cricketing journey. Parag affectionately referred to Kohli as "The king who gave me my India cap" during a recent Instagram Q&A session where he was asked about his biggest influences.
Parag made history in August 2024 as the first male cricketer from Assam to play for India in ODIs. He received his cap from Kohli before the second ODI against Sri Lanka in Colombo. The moment was not merely ceremonial but deeply symbolic for Parag, representing his aspirations as a cricketer.
A video shared by the BCCI captured Kohli's encouraging words as he presented cap No. 256 to Parag: "Riyan, firstly congratulations for getting to play your first game for India... they’ve seen something special in you. And having spoken to GG Bhai, selectors, Rohit and everyone, they see something special in you."
Kohli further added, "You have that ability to be a match-winner for India... No better time to step in today, 0-1 down, to start off your international career. With an impactful presence on the field ball bat and fielding as well, I wish you all the best."
While Parag's ODI debut resulted in only 15 runs, his potential is evident. In nine T20Is, he has scored 106 runs with a strike rate of 151.4, showcasing the aggressive style that made him a prominent figure in the IPL.
As Riyan Parag continues his development on the international stage, his respect for Virat Kohli remains clear, acknowledging the impact of the player who welcomed him into the Indian team and significantly influenced his career.
