Shubman Gill's Captaincy Under Scrutiny: Manjrekar Calls for More Aggression After India's Loss to England

Following India's defeat to England, Sanjay Manjrekar critiqued Shubman Gill's captaincy, suggesting he was overly defensive despite favourable conditions. Manjrekar contrasted Gill's approach with Virat Kohli's aggressive style. He lauded Rishabh Pant's form but cautioned KL Rahul against inconsistency. India, trailing 0-1, faces England in the second Test at Edgbaston.

Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has shared his thoughts on Shubman Gill's captaincy following India's five-wicket loss to England in the first Test at Headingley. While acknowledging Gill's talent and composure as a batsman, Manjrekar advised the young captain to be more aggressive, particularly when conditions favor India.

Speaking on Star Sports' Game Plan, Manjrekar expressed confidence in Gill's batting at No. 4, suggesting that experience will only enhance his performance. He anticipates Gill converting starts into bigger scores, learning from previous dismissals.

However, Manjrekar focused on Gill's field placements and leadership decisions. He observed that despite the overcast conditions not significantly aiding the bowlers, India adopted an overly defensive strategy.

Manjrekar stated, “Overcast conditions, I know the ball wasn't doing too much, but they pre-empted the English approach and had a far too defensive field,”

He drew a comparison to Virat Kohli's captaincy, noting Kohli's proactive approach to taking wickets, contrasting it with Gill's more conservative style. Manjrekar emphasized that while Gill's personality differs from Kohli's, a less defensive mindset would be beneficial.

Manjrekar added, “Whether they would have got wickets or not, Kohli would have shown the opposition that he's trying to get them out. Gill is not that kind of personality, nor that kind of captain. But maybe don't go so defensive pre-empting things,”

Manjrekar also lauded Rishabh Pant's form and resilience, expecting him to carry his momentum into the second Test. He cautioned KL Rahul to maintain consistency, highlighting Rahul's importance to Indian cricket. “KL Rahul cannot be a one-hundred wonder or a one-Test-match performer. Indian cricket needs him badly,” he said.

The second Test is scheduled to commence on Wednesday at Edgbaston, with India currently trailing 0-1 in the five-match series.
