Ilia Topuria needed just one round to finish Charles Oliveira, knocking him out cold to capture the vacant lightweight title in the UFC 317 main event.

LAS VEGAS – Ilia Topuria delivered on his bold prediction, securing a stunning first-round knockout against Charles Oliveira to seize the vacant lightweight title at UFC 317.

Topuria (17-0) etched his name in UFC history, becoming the tenth fighter to hold titles in two weight classes. The decisive blow came at 2:27 of the first round when Topuria connected with a precise right hand to Oliveira's chin, followed by a left hook that sealed the victory. Oliveira was already falling from the initial impact.

What makes Topuria's achievement even more remarkable is that he is the first two-division champion in UFC history to maintain an unblemished record.

"I already said it," declared Topuria, who exuded confidence even before the fight, holding a celebratory dinner the night before. "I represent the new era of mixed martial arts. This is the next level of the game."

The UFC immediately ignited a potential future rivalry by bringing Paddy Pimblett into the cage after Topuria's triumph. Pimblett, the No. 8-ranked lightweight from Liverpool, England, and Topuria have a history stemming from 2021 when Topuria took offense to comments Pimblett made regarding the Russo-Georgian War of 2008. Topuria, representing Spain, has Georgian heritage.

Pimblett and Topuria faced off in the cage, setting the stage for a potential future clash. Earlier in the week, Topuria expressed his desire to face Pimblett in his first title defense, ideally in Las Vegas.

"If he thinks he's ready, come on. You blond b----," Topuria challenged.

Despite the post-fight theatrics, Topuria's dominant performance remained the central story. He successfully thwarted Oliveira's repeated attempts to clinch and initiate takedowns. When Oliveira managed to briefly take him down, Topuria quickly reversed the position, ending up on top of the renowned submission specialist.

This victory further solidifies Topuria's ascent as one of the most dominant forces in MMA. He has now secured knockout victories over three legendary fighters, including former featherweight champions Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway.

In addition to Pimblett, Topuria has also expressed interest in facing former lightweight champion Islam Makhachev, who recently vacated his title in anticipation of a move to the welterweight division.
