Barcelona’s perfect start to the La Liga season came to an end on Sunday after a 1-1 draw away to Rayo Vallecano, with the match overshadowed by a malfunction to the video review system. Lamine Yamal gave the champions the lead from the penalty spot in the 40th minute after being tripped by Pep Chavarría. Rayo players and staff furiously contested the call, but with VAR unavailable, the referee’s decision stood. Yamal, who celebrated by pretending to crown himself, later said: “They had fouled me, I felt confident and I always am ready to put the team on my back.”

The home side, however, caused Barcelona constant problems with their pace and movement in behind. Goalkeeper Joan García was forced into five major saves, including two one-on-one stops, keeping his side in front until Fran Pérez equalised with a volley from a corner in the 67th minute. Coach Hansi Flick admitted his team struggled to control the contest: “We have to control the ball better. We have to be happy with the point. Joan García played a fantastic match today.” The absence of VAR dominated the post-match discussion. Rayo coach Íñigo Pérez, booked for his heated protests during the first half, later apologised for what he called his “embarrassing behaviour.”
He added: “I am a firm defender of the referee’s right to make mistakes. What made me lose my cool was that you can’t start playing with video review and then be told that now you are playing without it.”
