Watch: Aaryavir Sehwag channels father's flair with boundary blitz in T20 league

Aaryavir Sehwag, the 17-year-old son of cricket legend Virender Sehwag, made an impressive debut in the 2025 Delhi Premier League (DPL), showcasing his flair for aggressive batting. Representing Central Delhi Kings, Aaryavir opened the innings against East Delhi Riders at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on 27 August. He wasted no time announcing his arrival, striking four boundaries in a 16-ball, 22-run cameo.

Despite the occasion, Aaryavir was not overawed and took his time to get going, scoring just one run off four deliveries in the first two overs. Soon, he cut loose, smashing two boundaries off Test bowler Navdeep Saini. The right-handed batter held his pose after playing a well-timed lofted cover drive, before creating room to dispatch another through the cover region.

Aaryavir did not stop there. He targeted 17-year-old left-arm spinner Rounak Waghela, hitting two successive boundaries in the fifth over. However, he was dismissed by Rounak for 22 in the same over.

His knack for hitting back-to-back boundaries brought memories flooding back for fans. At the Arun Jaitley Stadium, where his father had once tormented some of the world’s best bowlers, Aaryavir was taking his first tentative steps.

In addition to his batting, Aaryavir also took a fine catch to dismiss East Delhi Riders opener Sujal Singh. Central Delhi posted 155 in their innings, powered by Yugal Saini’s 32-ball 52. In reply, East Delhi managed just 93, their batters finding no answers to 24-year-old fast bowler Money Grewal, who claimed a five-wicket haul.

Aaryavir’s journey into competitive cricket began with notable performances in youth tournaments. He drew attention by scoring a remarkable 297 runs for Delhi Under-19 against Meghalaya in the Cooch Behar Trophy, underlining his appetite for long innings. His batting prowess earned him a place in the Delhi Under-16 team, where he further honed his skills. Aaryavir is also part of the Under-19 state team and will be hoping to make the most of the opportunities the DPL offers this season.

The teenage opener was bought by Central Delhi Kings for Rs 8 lakh in the auction earlier this year following a bidding war. He earned his place in the XI after senior Delhi batter Yash Dhull was released to play the Duleep Trophy, a premier red-ball tournament showcasing top talent from across the country.

Central Delhi currently top the points table with seven wins from 10 matches in the eight-team league. They will face East Delhi once again, this time in Qualifier 1 on 29 August.
