India batter Shreyas Iyer is nowhere close to becoming the Indian ODI captain, hinted Indian Cricket Board secretary Devajit Saikia. Speaking to Hindustan Times after India's Asia Cup squad selection, Saikia said that there had not been any discussions about Shreyas Iyer taking over the ODI team.
The decision to snub Shreyas Iyer from the Asia Cup team was criticised by a section of the fans. Iyer, who recently led Punjab Kings to the final of the Indian Premier League 2025, had a sensational outing for his new franchise. However, he is not currently in the reckoning for the T20I team.
Shreyas, however, has established himself in the ODI side with tremendous performances in the ODI World Cup 2023 and the Champions Trophy 2025. The right-hander was not in the reckoning for the Champions Trophy squad but was able to break into the playing XI with sensational performances as a replacement for the injured Virat Kohli.
As the Indian cricket team readies to transition from 38-year-old Rohit Sharma, the idea was floated in some circles that Shreyas has the pedigree to take over the side. However, Saikia, in the interview, was quick to shut any rumours down.
“That’s news to me. There have been no such discussions,” the BCCI secretary said.
The publication also quoted a BCCI source, who suggested that it was Shubman Gill who was the one being groomed as the ODI captain.
“He averages 59 in ODI cricket and is already the vice-captain of the team. There is no way someone who has recently been appointed Test captain, found some success and has age on his side should not take over leadership in ODI cricket when the time comes,” HT quoted a BCCI official as saying.
Gill was appointed as the Test captain of the Indian team in the 5-match Test series against England. Gill led from the front, scoring over 700 runs in the series and helping the team draw 2-2 against Ben Stokes' side.
The batter has already firmed his place in the Test and the ODI side, and has been named the vice-captain of the Asia Cup side as well.
