BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has rubbished the retirement talk surrounding Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, saying that both men are still playing ODIs. After retirements from T20Is and Tests, many have been looking at what the future holds for both stars. Rumours were floating around that the Australia tour in October could be a farewell of sorts for both men.
Both Rohit and Kohli have restarted their training ahead of a return to white-ball cricket, quietly putting rumours to bed. A report also stated that the BCCI are calm about the matter and aren't in a hurry to decide the futures of the star batters. While speaking in a talk show, Mr. Shukla was asked by one of the hosts if Kohli and Rohit will get a farewell like Sachin Tendulkar, when he decided to step away from the game.
The BCCI vice-president questioned why people are so worried about both men when they're still playing in ODIs.
"When did they retire? Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli both will still play ODIs, so if they are still playing, then why talk about farewell now? Why are you people worrying already?" said Shukla.
Mr. Shukla also said that the BCCI never tells any player to retire and it is up to them to make the call.
"Our policy is very clear – BCCI never tells any player to retire. He has to take his own decision. He himself has to take this call," said Shukla.
The BCCI vice-president pointed out that Kohli is still one of the fittest players and that Rohit continues to be a great ODI player. Mr. Shukla told fans to not think about farewells at the moment when it comes to the star duo.
"When that bridge comes, we will tell you how to cross it. You people are already talking about farewells. Kohli is very fit, he is going on. Rohit Sharma is playing very well. And you people are already worried about farewell," said Shukla.
Kohli and Rohit will be back in the mix when India tour Australia for the ODI series from October 19 to 25.
