Norris Stuns with Austrian GP Pole as McLaren Pace Dominates Qualifying

Tuesday - 05/08/2025 05:06
Lando Norris lifted his championship hopes with a dominant performance in qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix.

Lando Norris delivered a sensational performance in qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix, securing pole position with a commanding lead over Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. The McLaren driver's lap time was a blistering 0.521 seconds faster than his nearest rival, signaling a potential shift in the championship battle.

Norris' teammate, Oscar Piastri, finished third. His final Q3 lap was compromised by a spin from Pierre Gasly, which brought out yellow flags.

This result comes after a disappointing race for Norris in Canada, where a collision with Piastri led to his retirement, widening the gap between the two McLaren drivers in the championship standings.

"It was a good lap, for sure," Norris exclaimed. "My Q1 was good, and I knew there were a few places where I could get a bit more time, and I did exactly that. I did what I planned to do, so very happy."

The Austrian Grand Prix presents a golden opportunity for Norris to close the points deficit ahead of the season's midpoint at Silverstone. With McLaren demonstrating exceptional pace at the Red Bull Ring, Norris may have to contend with a challenge from his own teammate during the 71-lap race.

Piastri's initial Q3 attempt placed him just 0.062 seconds behind Leclerc, who achieved his best qualifying position since the Monaco Grand Prix.

"I think we easily had enough pace in the car this weekend to get on the front row," Piastri commented.

Leclerc's Ferrari teammate, Lewis Hamilton, secured fourth place, his best qualifying result of the season. This result underscores the performance gains made by the Italian team with their upgraded floor.

Max Verstappen was forced to abandon his final Q3 attempt due to Gasly's yellow flags, resulting in a seventh-place start. He will line up behind Liam Lawson of Racing Bulls and George Russell of Mercedes.

Gabriel Bortoleto reached Q3 for the first time in his career, securing eighth position for Sauber, ahead of Kimi Antonelli and Gasly.

Fernando Alonso will start 11th for Aston Martin, narrowly missing a spot in the top ten. Alex Albon will start 12th. Isack Hadjar qualified 13th for Racing Bulls, followed by Franco Colapinto and Oliver Bearman.

Lance Stroll missed Q2 by a narrow margin and will start 16th. Esteban Ocon was 17th, followed by Yuki Tsunoda, who struggled with front grip.

Carlos Sainz suffered damage and will start 19th, ahead of Nico Hülkenberg.
