NASA has announced a new target launch date of Wednesday, June 25, for the Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) to the International Space Station. The mission had been subject to earlier delays due to a combination of technical evaluations, adverse weather, and safety protocols.
The Ax-4 mission will be commanded by Peggy Whitson, a former NASA astronaut and current director of human spaceflight at Axiom Space. Shubhanshu Shukla, representing India's ISRO, will pilot the mission, accompanied by mission specialists Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski from Poland and Tibor Kapu from Hungary, both representing the European Space Agency.
The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft are confirmed to be in optimal condition at Launch Complex 39A, located at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The entire crew is currently undergoing pre-flight quarantine as final preparations progress.
Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, a pilot in the Indian Air Force from Lucknow, is poised to become the second Indian to venture into space, following Rakesh Sharma's historic mission in 1984. Shukla brings over 2,000 hours of flight experience on aircraft such as the MiG-29 and Su-30 MKI, and will serve as the mission pilot for Ax-4.
