India Faces Relegation After Pro League Defeat to China
The Indian women's hockey team has been relegated from the FIH Pro League after succumbing to a 3-2 defeat against China. This loss marks their eighth consecutive defeat in the league, sealing their fate at the bottom of the standings.
With only 10 points from 16 matches, India's journey in the Pro League concludes, leading them to compete in the FIH Nations Cup, a second-tier tournament organized by the sport's governing body.
The match witnessed goals from Sunelita Toppa in the 9th minute and Rutuja Dadaso Pisal in the 38th minute for India. However, China's Zhang Ying responded with two penalty corner conversions in the 19th and 39th minutes, while Xu Wenyu scored the decisive goal.
The game commenced with both teams displaying initial hesitation. China's Chen Yang had an early opportunity but failed to convert.
India swiftly gained momentum, with Sunelita Toppo scoring after receiving a pass from Neha Goyal, executing a skillful reverse hit. China earned a penalty corner in the 11th minute but was met with a robust Indian defense.
China intensified their offensive efforts, securing consecutive corners in the 18th minute. India initially maintained their defensive composure.
A defensive lapse by Manisha Chauhan resulted in China being awarded a penalty stroke. However, India successfully challenged the decision, leading to a penalty corner instead.
Zhang Ying capitalized on the penalty corner, leveling the score. China then secured another penalty corner just before halftime, with Ying scoring again, giving China a 2-1 lead.
In the 37th minute, despite Neha's attempt being thwarted by the Chinese goalkeeper, India earned consecutive penalty corners. Rutuja scored from a variation play assisted by Navneet Kaur, bringing the score to 2-2.
India continued their offensive push and earned another penalty corner in the 40th minute, but China's defense remained resolute.
China dominated the latter part of the match, earning multiple penalty corners in the 48th and 50th minutes, but failed to convert.
The pivotal moment arrived in the 53rd minute when China was awarded another penalty corner. Zhang's flick was deflected by Xu, securing the victory for China.
This result concludes India's campaign in the FIH Pro League, confirming their relegation to the Nations Cup for the upcoming season.
