Chelsea have pulled out of an agreed deal that would have seen striker Nicolas Jackson join Bayern Munich on a season-long loan. The decision came after Liam Delap, their summer signing, suffered a hamstring injury that is expected to keep him sidelined for around two months.
According to The Athletic, Bayern and Chelsea had already reached an agreement for Jackson to head to Germany on loan with an option to buy, in a deal worth around 80 million overall. The Senegal forward had even been cleared to travel for his medical before Chelsea made a late U-turn.
The situation changed after Delap, who arrived from Ipswich Town earlier in the summer, picked up his injury during the Blues’ win over Fulham. Head coach Enzo Maresca later confirmed the striker could be out for as long as eight weeks. That leaves Chelsea with only Joao Pedro as a fit, recognised No. 9.
“When you have two strikers, it is enough. When one of them is injured for weeks, it is not enough,” Maresca admitted after the Fulham game. He also praised youngster Tyrique, who filled in up front despite not being a natural striker, and reminded that Pedro Neto had previously been used as an emergency forward.
The setback has reshaped Jackson’s immediate future. The 23-year-old had been linked with an exit all summer, especially after Delap and Pedro joined the squad. He was also left out of several pre-season matches, fuelling speculation that he was not in Maresca’s first-choice plans.
While Jackson has shown flashes of promise since joining Chelsea, his finishing has often been criticised, with several missed chances in key moments last season. Yet with Delap unavailable and limited options up front, Chelsea will now turn back to him. The Blues expect him to compete directly with Joao Pedro for the central role and deliver the consistency they need in attack.
For Jackson, what seemed like an exit door has turned into a fresh chance to prove himself in London.
